Effects of surface properties of brown fused alumina on the strength of vitrified abrasive tools

The abrasive grains are treated by different means and S-450 scanning electron microscope (SEM) is used to observe and study the interfaces of abrasive grains and bond. Results show that the impurities such as Fe, Ti, Ca and Mg that exist on the surface of general brown fused alumina grains will react with bond under high temperature, resulting in the apparent cracks, pores and crystals forming on the reaction interface of abrasive grains and bond, and consequently the strength of abrasive wheel is reduced; however, if the surface of brown fused alumina grains are properly treated, for example by acid cleaning or coating, the strength of vitrified abrasive tools can be enhanced.
